Grand National hotels 2027: where to stay

The Grand National Festival runs from Thursday 8 to Saturday 10 April 2027. Liverpool city centre is a useful first search if you want the official Merseyrail connection to Aintree. Compare the entire stay and the journey back before choosing a room.

Hotel search dates

Searches below check in 7 April 2027 and check out 11 April 2027, covering the whole Festival. Adjust them for a shorter visit.

Choose your racing days before your room

The Festival opens on Thursday 8 April, Ladies Day is Friday 9 April and Grand National Day is Saturday 10 April. A stay covering every racing day needs arrival before Thursday and departure after Saturday; the search dates should match that plan. If you only attend the National, adjust the accommodation dates rather than paying for the whole meeting automatically.

Write down your group’s arrival arrangements before comparing listings. Someone arriving late on Friday needs a property that will actually accept that check-in. Someone leaving straight after Saturday’s racing needs a plan for their bag as well as their train. A room booking does not establish where belongings can be left after checkout: ask the property directly and check the racecourse’s entry information separately.

Liverpool city centre

For a trip built around rail, start with the walk between your accommodation and Liverpool Central or Moorfields. The Jockey Club’s 2027 travel page lists a frequent Festival service between these stations and Aintree before and after racing. A property described as central may still involve a substantial walk to your preferred departure station, so map the actual address.

City-centre accommodation also lets you keep the evening separate from the racecourse journey. Decide whether your group wants dinner immediately after returning or time to change first. When comparing two rooms, consider the return station and the final walk in your raceday shoes. Do not assume a room near a mainline arrival station is equally convenient for the Merseyrail leg.

Aintree and Maghull

Searching near Aintree can reduce how far you travel on raceday, but the neighbourhood name alone says little about access to your entrance. Obtain the accommodation postcode and identify a usable walking route, including crossings. Ask about road access if your host expects you to arrive by car during the Festival.

Maghull belongs in a separate comparison within this search area. Check the hotel-to-station journey and the official Merseyrail planner for your exact travel day; the Festival uses an amended timetable on the Ormskirk branch. A nearby road distance is not evidence of an easy pedestrian route. For a room requiring a lift, arrange both directions before booking rather than leaving Saturday evening unresolved.

Southport

Southport widens the accommodation search while keeping the trip within the Merseyrail planning area. The official Festival advice says Southport-line services use a slightly amended timetable. Work through the interchange required for Aintree and the departure time from your particular station; there is no reason to assume a direct racecourse train from a hotel description.

Choose the property around the journey you will make twice, rather than just its location within the town. Check how you reach the station after breakfast and how you return from it after racing. If you want a quieter evening at your accommodation, establish food arrangements and check-in timing before choosing this base over Liverpool.

Formby

Formby is another area to compare if the city-centre search does not meet your needs. Treat it as a complete transport exercise: identify the relevant station, the connection for Aintree and the route back to your door. Confirm the departure, interchange and arrival time using the operator’s planner for your racing date.

Property addresses can be spread beyond the area name used by a booking search. Confirm whether walking to your departure point suits everyone in the party and whether a taxi would be needed at either end. A slightly lower room total loses its advantage if separate transfers are needed each day. Include those transfers in your comparison before committing.

Ormskirk

Ormskirk is worth examining for a room with a practical station connection. The Festival transport page describes an amended fifteen-minute timetable on the Ormskirk branch, with different arrangements at some intermediate stations. Use the current journey planner to establish which train you would actually catch to Aintree.

Check the property’s breakfast hours if your group plans an early start, and give the return station-to-room journey its own allowance. For anyone joining you from elsewhere, agree whether to meet at the accommodation, station or course. A clear meeting place is especially useful when your party uses different outward routes but shares the same room booking.

Chester

Chester is a wider search, so judge it by the complete outward and return itinerary. The Grand National’s official travel advice tells Wirral-line passengers to change at Moorfields for an Aintree-bound service. Confirm that the route from your chosen departure point uses that connection before applying it to your plans.

A room convenient for an evening in Chester may be less convenient for departure the next morning. Compare its station access with your preferred check-in time and the train after racing. If you are attending several days, multiply the journey effort across the whole trip. Avoid treating a manageable Saturday visit as proof that the same base suits three consecutive racedays.

Manchester

Manchester can provide another accommodation search when you are prepared to travel farther. First establish a workable train to Liverpool and the onward transfer to Merseyrail; then check the return connection after leaving Aintree. Choose an itinerary that leaves time to transfer within Liverpool and reach the racecourse comfortably.

Allow a genuine connection margin when buying a timed onward ticket. The short-looking gaps between services are not a promise that you can leave a crowded event and cross a station in that interval. For a group, compare the full cost per person, including onward rail and any late transfer to the property. Decide whether a shorter racing visit would make this base more comfortable.

Wirral

Wirral is a broad area rather than one departure point. Select the actual town and station before comparing rooms; the venue advises Wirral-line passengers to change at Moorfields for Aintree. Map your property’s position against that journey instead of accepting a generic description of being near Liverpool.

Plan the final transfer after the return train, especially if the accommodation is outside walking distance of a station. Ask a prospective host about access and check-in, but use the operator’s timetable for train details. Keep the station name in your shared itinerary so companions know exactly where to regroup if they travel back separately.

What the official Festival travel advice confirms

The 2027 page lists a seven-and-a-half-minute service from Liverpool Central and Moorfields to Aintree at approximately 11:00–13:00, and back towards the city at approximately 16:30–20:30. These published windows explain why a city-centre rail base is useful; they do not replace checking the train you need. Merseyrail’s journey planner remains the place to confirm departures and amended branch services.

Drivers must book Festival parking in advance. Aintree is on the A59 near the M57 and M58, and road closures operate around the event. Hotel parking and racecourse parking are different arrangements: securing one does not provide the other. Read the instructions for your booked racecourse car park and establish how the accommodation handles arrival during your stay.

Booking terms and a realistic alternative search

Begin comparing rooms once you know your ticket day and travel plan. Use the availability and total shown for your exact dates when comparing properties. Look at the total for all nights, the payment schedule, cancellation deadline and any minimum stay. A reservation that remains flexible for your plans can be more useful than a lower headline rate with terms you cannot meet.

If your first area has no suitable room, widen one decision at a time: try a different neighbourhood, fewer racing days or a larger commuting search. Check the new journey before making a non-refundable booking. Save the property’s cancellation terms separately from your race ticket confirmation; each booking has its own conditions.

Before paying, make sure every guest has a bed, your arrival fits reception hours, and the final journey home still works if leaving the course takes longer than hoped. Tell the property about access needs directly. The useful comparison is a room and a completed return plan together, rather than a hotel listing considered in isolation.
