The 2027 Gold Cup: date and time
The Gold Cup is scheduled for Friday 19 March 2027 at 16:00 in the official 2027 Festival schedule. This is a published 2027 time, not a time borrowed from the previous year, and the venue expressly says its schedule can change. Recheck the official event schedule before travelling.
Use the Cheltenham Festival guide for the full meeting, tickets and travel. If Friday is your main aim, book the correct day and enclosure rather than relying on a general description of Festival admission. Child prices differ between the official ticket page and general FAQ in the current review, so confirm a child booking directly.
1924, and the earlier Flat namesake
The modern steeplechase began on 12 March 1924, when Red Splash won. An earlier race called the Cheltenham Gold Cup had been staged as a three-mile Flat event on Cleeve Hill in July 1819, won by Spectre. Describing 1924 as the first race ever to use the name would therefore leave out an important distinction.
The official history places the modern race in Frederick Cathcart’s plan for a conditions contest for leading chasers. The Gold Cup was introduced in 1924 and the Champion Hurdle followed in 1927. Those dates concern the development of the Festival programme; they do not mean that the older Flat contest became a jumps race without a break.
For a visitor, the distinction helps make sense of the anniversary references around the meeting. The modern race’s history is the story of a steeplechase and the horses that returned to win it. The earlier namesake belongs to a different racing setting, even though both are part of Cheltenham’s longer history.
Famous winners and different eras
Golden Miller won five consecutive Gold Cups from 1932 to 1936 and also won the 1934 Grand National. His sequence remains a useful starting point for understanding the place of repeat winners in the race’s history. It is a historical record, not a basis for predicting the next field.
Cottage Rake won in 1948, 1949 and 1950, while Arkle completed his own sequence in 1964, 1965 and 1966. Dawn Run’s victory came in 1986 and Desert Orchid’s in 1989. Norton’s Coin won in 1990 at 100/1, a reminder that the winners’ list contains both enduring favourites of racing history and less expected results.
Best Mate won in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Kauto Star won in 2007 and regained the race in 2009. Those names explain why a racecourse visitor encounters references to past winners well beyond a results table, including the name of the Best Mate Enclosure. The enclosure name does not describe the ticket’s current price or access.
The original 1924 trophy returned to Cheltenham in 2018 and became the perpetual trophy. The official history and facts pages give the background to these milestones. Use them alongside the recent table below if you want to connect the familiar names with their winning years.
Where to watch: compare the public enclosures
The recorded Club description includes the Main Grandstand and winning-post lawn, plus Tattersalls access. Tattersalls includes the Parade Ring and grandstand viewing steps, with Festival areas described in its guide. Best Mate has its own covered stand across the track and does not include the recorded Parade Ring access.
These are different ways to spend the day, not three prices for the same route. Decide whether your priority is the finish, movement around the main public areas or a separate viewing base. A covered stand is not automatically an allocated seat, and access to a bar or restaurant does not mean that food is included in public admission.
Cheltenham enclosures compared sets out the details; Club, Tattersalls and Best Mate retain their own source notes. Current prices were not verified from the booking widget, so do not treat historical early-bird amounts as a live quote.
The last 20 Gold Cup winners
The table records the 20 runnings from 2007 to 2026, using the official hall of fame. It identifies the winning horse, jockey and trainer; it is a historical list and does not name a 2027 runner.

Plan the visit around the whole raceday
The headline race is only one part of the visit. Read the official schedule for gates, the first race and any event-specific travel arrangements, then decide how much of the day you want to see. Keep the admission ticket and the return plan available offline rather than relying on a mobile connection at the entrance.
Choose your ticket area before arranging to meet friends inside. Public admission, a reserved seat and hospitality can give different access, and a premium name does not settle whether a table, meal or particular viewing position is included. Ask about the actual route if a step-free position or a place for a companion is essential to your day.
Prepare for the forecast as well as the occasion. Check the exact enclosure’s clothing instructions, bring suitable layers and think about the ground you will cross. A photograph of a sunny previous meeting is not a weather forecast for your booking. The individual enclosure guides keep the recorded clothing and arrival details together.
Book a realistic way home and agree a collection point if using a taxi or a lift. Confirm the last rail connection and any required change separately from the course’s shuttle. Do not interpret a published race time as a promised time at the station or car park; getting out of the venue is another part of the journey.
For an overnight stay, compare cancellation deadlines, room occupancy and check-in arrangements. A race ticket and a hotel reservation are separate purchases unless your booking explicitly says otherwise. Adjust the dated search below to match the nights you actually want, including whether you are staying after the headline race.
